Who are the Angry Millennials?
We are a collective of writers, artists, intellectuals, and other content creators who are sick and tired of mindlessly obeying the status quo. We are the victims of trickle down economics and neoliberal globalization who were forced into a socioeconomic system that rewards the richest members of our society while saddling the rest of us with high interest mortgages and student loans that lack adequate consumer protections.
We were told that if we just worked hard in school then we would succeed in the economy and earn enough to sustain ourselves. We walked away from the celebrations of graduation week and awoke to the reality of unpaid internships and low-paying temporary jobs that offer no benefits. The media focuses on our entire generation as if we are lazy and undeserving, entitled and narcissistic, when all we have done is work-and work honestly-within the confines of the very system they sustain.
We know for an absolute fact that saving the climate is essential to our survival, and that the solution includes carbon divestment, renewable energy expansion, and ending the corporate exploitation and destruction of the resources that keep our species and our planet alive. We will fight for our planet for the sake of our generation and all generations to come.
We are aware that black lives matter, all lives matter. We are sick and tired of witnessing all forms of racism, whether interpersonal or systemic. We resist the inhumane institutions of police brutality, corruption, and mass incarceration. We will not stand for the increased militarization of the police.
We clearly recognize the class divisions in our society and the war that has been waged on the poor by the 1% and every corporate interest controlled by them and their collaborators. We know that austerity measures are just one more method used by the ultra-rich to extract the wealth of the general population. We will not be drained dry.
We know that the entire political system is rigged, flooded with money from Super PACs, beholden to corporate interests. Supreme Court decisions like Citizens United vs. FEC and FEC vs. McCutcheon have reinforced our distrust of a justice system which clearly only works for those with power and capital. We refuse these corrupt institutions. We reject its faulty conclusions.
We have abandoned the mainstream media, and cringe with disgust as we flip through the red-blue echo chamber, wondering why we only have two options, and why so many issues that matter to us are completely missing from the dialogue.
We can no longer site idly by and accept the injustices that we witness each and every day we are alive on this Earth. We will not be afraid to express ourselves. We will not be cowed by paramilitary police forces and domestic spying programs. With our voices as our weapons, we will create the world that we wish to see through writing, research, art, and the sciences.
We are young. We are loud. We are angry. We are not taking this shit anymore.
